Context

Online medical education is already a very popular modality for accessing and sharing medical information and teaching. While there are many requirements and resources for ultrasound training, there is not a comprehensive, digital curriculum integrating high-quality didactics and videos demonstrating proper use of ultrasound with real-time feedback for learners. Our goal was to provide learners with much more than the experience of a traditional lecture with interactive modules via SonoLearning: Foundations in Point of Care Ultrasound.

Project

The goal of this project was to develop a premium interactive curriculum in an online format so that it is easily accessible to the entire Northwestern community and even publicly for national and global education in ultrasound.

Objectives & Outcomes

Our project is significantly behind expected delivery dates. We are still finishing the initial and largest module (FAST Exam: The Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma) whose framework we will use to create the other 11. We hope to begin initial implementation in May and June for medical students during their Emergency Medicine rotation and in July for the incoming Emergency Medicine residency class as part of their introduction to the ultrasound curriculum.

Results

Our project is very much still under way. I am excited to see how it is coming together and can’t wait to have a few modules to begin sharing with my students.

Lessons Learned

I underestimated the time and work involved to translate slides to a more interactive format with real-time illustrations, videos, and questions and feedback.
